Swimming Pool Heaters

There are 3 major types of pool heaters:

  • Solar Pool Heaters
  • Gas Pool Heaters
  • Pool Heat Pumps

All pool heaters are sized using BTU’s = measured amount of heat created by a pool heater. Outputs range from 75,000 Btu to 450,000 Btu.

NOTE: Adding a solar cover and digital thermometer adds to the efficiency of your pool!

Solar pool heaters pump water from your swimming pool to the filter and partially diverting it through a group of solar collectors that warm the water before it goes back into the pool.

Solar pool heaters require a lot of space. Your pool’s size and how long you keep your pool open determines how many square feet of solar collectors you need. You’ll also need the right size pool pump. You will need a larger or separate pump to help push the water through the solar collectors.

Gas pool heaters use natural gas or propane. Pool water comes in, a combustion chamber warms the water, then returns it to the pool. Depending on availability and price in your area, both types of heaters are the same price.

The heater’s right size depends on your pool’s surface area in square feet, the average outdoor temperature during the coldest month, and how warm you want your pool. BTU of your heater is calculated by Pool Area (sq ft) x Temperature Rise x 12.

TIP: Measure the distance from your Gas Meter to where the Pool Heater installs area, will determine the size of the heater required.

A pool heater warms pool water by taking outside air and directing it over an evaporator coil. A liquid refrigerant inside the coil absorbs the heat from the air and turns into a gas. The warm gas heads to the compressor, which increases the heat, making its way through a condenser. The condenser is what takes the hot gas and adds it to your pool water. The pump then sends the warmed water back into your pool.

The pump’s right size depends on your pool’s surface area in square feet, the average outdoor temperature during the coldest month, and how warm you want your pool. Pumps are rated by BTU and also rated by horsepower (Hp). Standard sizes include 3.5Hp/75,000 BTU, 5Hp/100,000 BTU and 6Hp/125,000 BTU.

Pool Filtration

A pool filter traps contaminants. Chlorine and other sanitizers work to kill bacteria; a filter is what removes them from the water. Pool filters measure the size of pollutants they are capable of removing in ‘microns’.

SAND FILTER

A sand filter contains a tank full of silica sand (or Zeosand/or Filterglass). The sand grabs contaminants and debris and traps them in the tank. A pressure gauge on the filter side will alert you when it’s time to backwash the filter.

Crown Spas & Pools uses Zeobrite. You only need half the amount of sand, and traps smaller contaminants. Zeobrite lasts about 5 years, which is similar to silica.

CARTRIDGE FILTERS

Cartridge filters are energy efficient and inexpensive, easy to maintain, and are more effective as long as you don’t have a large pool. Inside the cartridge is a plastic cylinder surrounded by pleats that captures the contaminants. Cleaning is done by removing the cartridge from the tank and spraying it with a hose.

Pool pumps cannot function without filters, as filters are rated by gallons per minute (GPM) & per square foot. The Flow rate must be rated the same GPM as your pump or higher.
