Measuring Standard Rectangular Pools

Standard rectangular pools require only overall length, overall width, and step dimensions. Measure the inside edge of your pool coping from water line to water line. Record step locations, step length, and step width separately on your sheet.

A-B Pool Safety Cover Measuring Guide for Custom Shapes

Custom pool shapes use two fixed reference points on your deck to plot your pool perimeter accurately. Mark two reference points on your deck and record your coordinates systematically. Follow these six steps to complete your measuring sheet.

Step 1: Sketch the Pool Outline

Draw a rough sketch of your pool shape on the grid sheet. Mark step locations, deep-end corners, and deck features clearly.

Step 2: Establish Your A-B Reference Line

Select a flat area on your deck at least 3 feet away from the water edge. Mark Point A and Point B on the deck surface using chalk. Place Point A on your left and Point B on your right as you face the pool. Ensure your A-B line runs parallel to the pool without crossing any water. Space Point A and Point B apart at a distance equal to two-thirds of your total pool length.

Step 3: Measure the A-B Baseline

Measure the exact distance between Point A and Point B with a tape measure. Record this baseline measurement in the designated space on your measuring sheet.

Step 4: Mark Perimeter Points Around the Pool

Chalk numbered points clockwise around the entire inside edge of your pool coping. Space points 3 feet apart along straight walls and outer curves. Space points 1 foot apart along tight inside curves and step corners. Place Point 1 directly across from the midpoint of your A-B line.

Step 5: Record Deck Obstructions

Mark all permanent deck obstructions located within 18 inches of the water edge. Identify non-removable features including handrails, slide legs, dive stands, and rock waterfalls. Note their exact perimeter points on your measuring sketch.

Step 6: Measure Point-to-Point Distances

Anchor your tape measure at Point A. Measure the distance from Point A to Point 1, Point 2, and every numbered mark around the pool. Record each measurement in Column A on your sheet. Move your tape measure to Point B. Measure the distance from Point B to every numbered point and record each value in Column B.
